The Origin of Durga Puja

The warrior goddess Durga was created, according to Hindu mythology, by the combined efforts of all the gods in heaven. When one of the asuras—evil creatures who live in “pataal,” or underneath the earth—was given a boon that declared that no man could kill him, he started to attempt to take over the Gods’ home. The concerned celestial beings were unable to overpower the crafty asura as a result of this. All the gods gathered to address this worrying problem, and they projected their energy and abilities to become Durga, also known as the impenetrable, a lady who could never be defeated.

Mahishasura was entranced by the goddess’ fiery beauty and wanted to marry her the moment he lay eyes on her. However, the goddess was only willing to wed a man who could vanquish her in combat. Mahishasura neglected to request exemption from ladies since he was careless and made a poor choice for his boon. Durga and Mahishasura engaged in a five-day combat that culminated in Durga’s victory, bringing peace back to the houses of the gods.
